Vince Lombardi once said, "A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done."

Take inventory of yourself...

Are you where you want to be?

If not, why not?

Look, I'm not going to fill you full of mindless fluff. You've heard enough of that from Oprah and the folks behind 'The Secret'. (If you haven't heard about that nonsense, I'll save it for another day...) Tommy Lasorda once said, ""The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man's determination." The truth is, most people give up WAY to easily.

Why?

Because there is WORK involved. Uh oh... did I just say a four-letter word?! ;-)

The bottom line is that if you want something in life, you have to decide that you are going to do whatever it takes to get it (provided that your actions are legal!)

And yes, it is going to be work.

But that doesn't mean you have to hate it!

In fact, I LOVE my work!

I daresay that each of us are wired in a way that if we are doing what we were designed to do, we will each love our own work.

Tom Landry once said, ""Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan."

What Coach Landry was saying is that the key component is that you take ACTION.

Good intentions, warm fuzzy thoughts and attempting to "will" good things to come your way will get you absolutely nothing.

Planning your work and working your plan is the key to success.

Planning your work... working your plan.

It's a simple formula. But most people miss it.

And it's easy to see why. There are so many confusing messages out there.

That's why we need a roadmap. A plan of action.

It's why we need sometimes need a little help designing that roadmap and planning our course of action.

And it's why it is a good thing that we have coaches like Lombardi, Lasorda and Landry...

... People who have gone before and know the road we walk

... People who are willing to share themselves for our greater good

... People who inspire and bring out the best in us

Yes, we all need people like that.

And while running an Internet business is not physical like playing a competitive sport, it is just as challenging.

In order to survive and thrive, you need a plan of action.

You need a road map.

Today, Thursday March 15th at 3 pm EST, you have an opportunity to take action and acquire your road map to the kind of success you have dreamed of.

If you have evaluated your life and realize that you are missing a key ingredient to take your business where you really want it to go, it is time for you to take action and decide that you are ready to take the next step.

Remember, the greatest journey begins with that very first step.

There's an old joke that goes, "How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?"

The answer? "One... but the light bulb has to WANT to change."

Do you want to change?

Only a small percentage of people who read this message will actually take action, plan their work, work their plan... and succeed.

In fact, I'd venture to say that only 5% of those who read this message will actually commit to the plan of success. It's the top 5% who move the world and make a difference.

Are you in that number?

I hope so. :-)

How Nice is Your Niche?

It's a basic AdSense strategy.

One page. One topic. One group of nicely targeted ads.

But what if your website covers more than one topic? Suppose you have a blog that's about cars, for example, and occasionally you like to write about satellite radios or travel destinations. Is it enough to put an off-topic post on a separate page or should you put it on a whole different website?

You'll need two pieces of information to answer that question.

The first is the clickthrough rate for pages with posts on your unusual topic. If you usually write about cars and occasionally post about where you like to drive, but the clickthrough rate still remains the same across all your pages, you don't need to change a thing. Your users are enjoying the variety as much as they like the rest of the site. They're interested in those off-topic pieces too.

Just make sure that each of your different blog topics carries a different channel so you can track how popular they are.

If the clickthrough rate is a lot lower on those pages though, you'll need to know something that's much harder to measure: whether you have enough enthusiasm about that topic to write about it more than occasionally.

If you're only comfortable writing about driving destinations or satellite radios or whatever it may be once a month, it's not going to be worth the effort and expense of launching a new site. Not without bringing in other writers.

But that doesn't mean you should stop writing about that topic. Sure, you want your site to make money. And maybe a post on a different subject would bring you more ad clicks. But you also want to enjoy creating your site. If you get the urge to write about something different, give it a shot. Just know how much you're paying for it.

You Can't Buy This

Aloha!

As you know, I am on vacation in Maui. As I write this, I am watching the sun rise behind the mountains, listening to the waves crash and enjoying the small birds that are landing on my balcony railing.

Yes, it is just another day in tropical paradise.

And yet, I am compelled to write... to share what is on my mind.

Because with all the success I have enjoyed, I am reminded that there is one thing I possess that cannot be bought.

It cannot be downloaded.

It cannot be gained by networking at a seminar.

It cannot be auctioned on eBay.

It is happiness.

What is the purpose of our pursuit for success?

Why do we work so hard?

What do we expect to find at the finish line?

Certainly, financial security is a priority. Not having to worry about how you are going to pay your mortgage, car payment, electricity, grocery bill, etc, is a major motivator for achievement.

But what happens once you have attained that goal?

The history books and newspapers are riddled with stories of prosperous people who led absolutely miserable lives.

Don't believe me? Just read the National Enquirer. (Those stores ARE true, aren't they?)

But seriously, surveys of individuals who have won the lottery or come into a great inheritance have revealed that many people don't know how to handle success... they crater under the weight of their prosperity.

I guess it is a time where you really need to know who your friends are, right?

So where does happiness fit into the big picture?

Well, as I write I think that perhaps happiness is the wrong word.

After all, to have happiness you have to have happenings.

In other words, happiness comes as the results of something that happens to you, whether through circumstances or through other people.

But happiness is a feeling. It is fleeting. Here today, gone tomorrow.

In order to have continued happiness, you must have ongoing happenings to bring you that happiness.

Does that make sense?

Perhaps the better word is "contentment"

It's the sense of knowing that you are in the right place doing the right things with the right people at the right time.

It's more than a feeling. It's a state of being that can abide even if there isn't something taking place at a given moment to make you feel happy.

While I believe it is important to pursue your success however you define it, I hope you would add contentment to the list of ultimate goals.

This explains how I can work while sitting on my balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

I am content working when I want to, not because I have to.

I am content sharing what I have learned hoping that at least one person will be inspired.

How about you? I'm always eager to hear your comments. Please take a moment and enter them below.

The Membership Bootcamp

OK, you know that I love AdSense... it's a great way to build a business.

But if you've been watching me, you know that I like all kinds of different online businesses.

And one type of website that has COMPLETELY transformed MY business is membership sites.

Or another fancy term for this is "continuity programs".

Basically, someone joins your site and then keeps on paying you month after month as long as they remain a member.

The beauty of this type of business is that as each month rolls around, you get all kinds of AUTOMATIC sales. You don't have to go out and make a bunch of sales... the sales are BUILT INTO your web site.

It almost sounds like magic, but it's actually all very simple. And thousands of people are doing this right now... all the way from one-person businesses up to the very largest businesses online (like the Wall Street Journal).

So here's something really cool...

I just came across a series of videos (that are available for free!) that show exactly how these sites work and how you can get started. You can go watch the videos here

That first video is pretty shocking... it shows sites making from $5000 per month all the way up to a site making more than $200k per MONTH.

All in all, there is something like 40 minutes of free video at that site - all about building your own cash-cow membership site.

This stuff is all 100% real...

Three Little Words

I've Got Three Little Words To Say To You...

No, not those words (although I'm sure you're very nice). I mean these three little words...

Just do it.

I know, Nike got there first. But they were right. You get nothing by doing nothing.

Back when I started out on the Web, becoming an online publisher meant buying a book about HTML the size of the Yellow Pages. It meant spending half a year reading it, another half a year writing the code... and another half a year fixing the bugs.

There was every excuse then for doing nothing, and continuing to dream.

Those days are over.

Today, you can be online -- with functioning, money-earning AdSense units -- in the time it takes to boil a kettle. Just sign up with Blogger, for example, and the registration will take a minute and the AdSense application another minute.

You'll still have to write your content. You'll still have to optimize your ads. You'll still have lots of work to do.

There are Internet millionaires. There are no overnight Internet millionaires.

Eventually, you'll probably want to have your own domain name instead of using one of Blogger's. You'll want more sites, more ads and a bigger range of ads. You'll want a steady stream of content and you'll want lots of traffic, of course.

And you'll want to go to the bank at the end of the month and deposit your checks from Google.

But for now -- right now -- you can be online.

So if you don't have a site yet, what are you waiting for. Just do it!

SiteSearch - An Underused Opportunity for Joint Ventures

Put a Google search box on your website and you'll give yourself an opportunity to pick up some extra revenue. You'll also give your site a bit of extra functionality by letting users search your old posts.

But you'll also be granting yourself a golden opportunity to create some joint ventures that could land you some finely targeted traffic.

When you generate the code for the search box, you'll be asked if you want to include SiteSearch -- the function that lets users search chosen sites as well as the Web. You can add three URLs that your users can search.

One of them will be the URL of your own website.

But what about the other two?

Find two sites that complement yours -- without competing with it -- and ask their publishers if they want to be included in your SiteSearch. In return, you can ask to be included in theirs. If those sites are about a similar topic to yours, you can be sure the traffic you receive from those searches will be targeted, and your users will be happy with the results from their searches too.

SiteSearch can be a great way for publishers to share similar users as they leave their sites. It's just a shame we can only do it twice.

Travels with Sheila Webinar Replay

Did you miss it?

A couple weeks ago, I did an exclusive webinar with one of the world's most traveled women.

She is a grandmother who has been in almost every country and knows how to travel on a budget.

She has camped at the base of Mt. Everest, rode camels through the desert, interacted with the gorillas of Africa and gotten lost in Siberia.

She is ... my mother. :-)

If you missed the one-hour webinar with my mom, you have another chance to experience it!

I have placed a video replay of the entire webinar online so you may enjoy it at your leisure.

If you ever wanted to learn how to see the world on a budget, or if you are just inspired by mom's story, you will want to watch this video!

How to Select a Popular Topic

Deciding on a topic for a blog post isn't always easy. Sometimes, you'll know exactly what you want to write. Other times, you'll struggle for an idea.

But there are times when a subject just seems unavoidable.

Whenever Apple releases a new product, Nintendo brings out a new game system or Harry Potter hits the news again, it seems as though everyone is writing about the same thing. And of course, those aren't the only times. Just wait until Oscar night, the Superbowl or the next elections.

When these things happen, writing about those topics just seems natural.

But it doesn't mean it's a good idea.

If you can't bring something new to the subject, your users are likely to be tired of reading about it. The last thing they'll want to see is yet another blog post giving them the same information that they can find anywhere else.

Fortunately, adding something new to the topic is usually fairly easy.

If the news story is about a product launch, you could try to interview someone from the company. That's much easier than it sounds. Most big corporations have an email address for press enquiries. Just send them a few questions, say that you're a blogger and you'll likely get some answers back from an executive. You get new content, they get new customers.

Or you could offer some unique tips and tricks. Try to find a few ways to squeeze more out of the product or enjoy the show and you'll give your users a reason to stop by and read.

The First Step to Success

I've been doing a lot of radio interviews lately. The media is very interested in The Next Internet Millionaire and I feel like I am spending hours on the phone!

Well, I just got off the phone for a radio interview and was asked what is the first thing that anyone who wants to create an Internet business should do.

My answer came with great clarity and without hesitation...

Attend an Internet marketing seminar!

Not only will you learn from some of world's greatest Internet success stories, but you will also benefit from the incredible networking opportunities that take place with the hundreds of other attendees.

I've actually said this until I am blue in the face. Some people get it. Some people don't.

In most cases, the ones who "get it" are the true entrepreneurs, and the most likely to go on to great successes.

How to Start a Blog

If you're new to blog, this article will answer you a lot questions, then you can decide if to have your own blog or not. So, let's begin.

What is a blog?
Blog is a new form of personal website, it uses some automation software so that makes publishing easier. In early days, if you want to have a personal websites, you'll need to sign up for a hosting space, while free or charged, then you'll have to use HTML or software like FrontPage/Dreamweaver to make some web pages, then upload them to your hosting space via FTP. Automation publishing system is usually expensive in early days, so only large commercial websites or professional firms use them. But things changed. Now with more powerful processors, larger storage and faster networking, even regular PC can do a lot. Thus makes automation publishing system cheaper. So you can use some of those automation publishing systems to publish something about your ideas and life to the Internet very easily.

More and more people enjoy this way to publish, the term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger in 1997. The short form, "blog", was coined by Peter Merholz in his blog Peterme.com in 1999. You can find more historical stuff on Wikipedia's Blog page.

How to Start?
As I talked before, most blogs are powered by automation publishing systems. If you want to start your own, you'll need to use one. There are many choices, basically you don't need to install anything onto your computer, you can always use on-line blog hosting/publishing services provided by various companies.

Another choice is mostly for nerd or who want to have more control over everything, you'll go to sign up for a hosting space, then you can install one publishing system in your hosting space and use it to start your blog.

Now I'll tell you more about the two choices.

On-line Blogging Services
Blogger.com is great site to recommend. It's originally found by Pyra Labs in 1999 and acquired by Google in 2003. Blogger.com supports a lot way to write your thoughts, you can use Web browser, mobile phone and even e-mail to write your thoughts and get published in Blogger.com. Blogger.com provides a lot beautiful page templates, you can change the total look-n-feel of your blog site whenever you want. And best of all, everything is FREE in Blogger.com.

Another good on-line blogging service is Microsoft's Live Spaces. You can use drag-n-drop to configure the layout of your blog in Live Spaces, and Live Spaces also has a lot beautiful page templates to choose from. But Live Spaces doesn't run well in Firefox browser, many features are only usable in Microsoft's own Internet Explorer browser. And if you're using a Mac, then Live Spaces is not for you, you'd go for Blogger.com or Apple's iWeb.

WordPress.com is also a great site worth trying. But the software they developed for publishing is a bit complicated, I mean there're too many things to learn in WordPress system, so if you're new to computer and Internet, WordPress may be a bit hard. However, if you could understand most elements in WordPress system, then you'll find it superb, there're a lot good blog site built on WordPress.

Dedicated Blogging Site
There are some limitations in online blogging services, for example you cannot bind a top domain name to your blog site in most on-line blogging services. So if you have ever tried to make your personal website in Dreamweaver in 1999, then you may want to try something else to start your blog.

You can first sign up for a hosting space in Dreamhost or some others which can support PHP + MySQL. Then download the latest package of WordPress (WordPress.com is built on multi-user version of WordPress and now we're talking about its regular version you can download for your personal blog) from WordPress.org and upload the extracted contents. Go several steps according to WordPress documentation and you can have your own dedicated blogging site set up. And Dreamhost also provides easy one-button installation for poplular blogging software like WordPress, so you can set-up your own WordPress site with help from Dreamhost in minutes.

There're a lot things to learn if you're interested in making your own blog publishing system. I'd recommend you to buy some books on HTML, PHP and MySQL and you can have your own blog publishing software in 1 month after you finished the books.
